Songs of Blood and Swords is a gripping insiders account on Murtaza Bhutto, a daughters memoir, fact fully written by Fatima Bhutto, the only eldest female Bhutto successor from the original Bhutto ancestors. This book furnishes the riveting account of the activities of Al-Zulfiqar, the armed group formed by Muratza Bhutto to avenge the judicial killing of his father Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The book deeply analyzes the life and death of Mir Murtaza and focus on the desperation of being in power which Benazir Bhutto longed for since she was a child. The manuscript also focuses on the 11-year dictatorship of Zia (1977-1989) which was one of the most squalid episodes in Pakistan’s unhappy history. It brutalized the country and its ruling elite beyond redemption and permitted the birth of a ubiquitous heroin mafia which still dominates the political and business life of the country. The toppling of the elected government and the hanging of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto inaugurated this degradation. At the same time martyrdom provided the Bhutto family with a halo which has only recently lost its shine.
The hardback also mentions Mir’s intimate relations when he was abroad which are further degraded in Raja Anwar’s book, The Terrorist Prince- Life and Death of Murtaza Bhutto. The book outlines clear facts and accuses Benazir for the killings of Murtaza and Shahnawaz Bhutto.
